Choosing Books For Your Child: School-Age

Tips for choosing age-appropriate books for your child

6-8 Years – 1st and 2nd Grade

  • Ask your child’s teacher what level she is reading at. Knowing this information will help you to choose books that match her skills. Her teacher may also be able to provide a list of appropriate books.
  • Easy-to-read books that are less than 50 pages and use simple vocabulary – words that are familiar from everyday use will build confidence. Sequential readers like ‘Hello Readers’, ‘Step into Reading’ and ‘Scholastic Readers’ are good options for early readers.
  • Books with text and illustrations will give her hints to the text.
  • Check out award winning books, like Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King.
  • Just because she is learning to read on her own doesn’t mean you should stop reading to her!  Pick more advanced books for you to read aloud, since her comprehension is more developed than her reading skills.

Reading tip! When your child is choosing a book to read, have her read one page aloud. For every word she stumbles over have her put up one finger.  If at the end of the page, all five of her fingers are up, she may consider choosing a different book.
