Where to Get Help in Massachusetts

Parental Stress Hotline: 24 Hours, 7 Days. (800) 632-8188
Support and referrals for parents with children of any age, as well as for other family members, care givers, friends and relatives.

Parents Helping Parents (PHP): (800) 882-1250
Help with parenting skills and family relationships through parent support groups jointly facilitated by parents and specially-trained volunteers from professional health and human services to guide discussions, suggest referrals to other services, and provide assistance when needed.

Legal Advocacy Resource Center (LARC): 24 Hours, 7 Days. (800) 342-LAWS
Provides legal information primarily to low-income residents on a wide range of issues such as housing, family law, public benefits, employment, and consumer (utilities, bankruptcy, etc) issues.

The Parent Line (United Way of Massachusetts Bay): (617) 421-1789
Offers parents and other caregivers quick, up-to-date parenting information on everything from nutrition to discipline to pregnancy. After hearing a pre-recorded message, callers can choose to speak directly with one of our trained, volunteer specialists. Parent Line messages are available in both English and Spanish.

First Call for Help (United Way of Massachusetts Bay): (800) 231-4377
Provides information and resources to any caller who needs help but does not know where to turn. Using a database of over 3,000 up-to-date services, trained volunteer telephone counselors can locate resources and advocate with other agencies on caller’s behalf. Information is available on support groups, employment, housing, fuel assistance, and other basic family needs.

National Runaway Switchboard: 24 Hours, 7 Days. (800) 621-4000
Helps children find shelters. Contacts parents or finds social service agency for protection. Staffed by young volunteers, hotline is primarily for children.

Health Helpline (Health Care for All): (800) 272-4232
Answers people’s questions about the health care system, provides information, and makes referrals to appropriate resources. For information in Spanish, call (617) 350-6207.

For reporting suspected child abuse or neglect in Massachusetts during business hours.
